2020 has been a tricky year for everyone, so how can you support your favorite small businesses as they Survive Mainstreet without having to spend any money?

Here are 10 ways you can help your small business community without spending a dollar!

1. Like their Facebook/ Instagram page

Liking the page itself is the easiest step to supporting your favorite local business.

Check to see what platforms they are on, and like all of their pages!
The page will likely have the same handle for all of their socials, so make sure to check on all the social media platforms you use!

2. Hit that notification bell!

You've probably heard your favorite YouTube channels, or Facebook Creators ask you to hit that notification bell, but have you ever wondered why?

With the advance of AI Algorithms, nothing you see is chronological and you may have liked a page, but have never seen it since. That is because any algorithm will only show you what you have interacted with.

Clicking the notification bell tells the algorithm that you want to see the content from that particular page and it will give you a notification when that page posts.

3. Interact with their posts

That's right, the trifecta: Like, Comment, and Share!
But what does that actually do?

Like we talked about before with the algorithm, each interaction with a post will determine what else you see, and these things are actually weighted.

If you "like" a post, but "comment" on another, your Al will show you more posts like the one you commented on vs those you only liked aka ENGAGEMENT!

Interacting with posts, beyond just liking, will promote a business page simply because you interacted with it. That's huge. It means you can affect how often their posts appear in feeds and how many people they can reach.

4. Watch at least 60 Seconds of each video

Did you know that Facebook and Youtube have social media "tiers"?
There are specific benchmarks each business page must reach before it reaches the next tier.

One Facebook tier, for example, is that a business page must have 30,000 unique 60 seconds views on their videos, and their videos must be at least 3 minutes long to count.

Now 30,000 seems like a lot, but if viewers hung in there for just 60 seconds of each video, then that directly helps the business reach its social media goals.

5. Write a Review

Think back to pre-Covid when you traveled to a new place and you searched types of places on yelp, or checked the reviews on their facebook page before going anywhere.

Positive reviews can drive new costumers to a business so make sure you hit all the big ones: Facebook, Yelp, Google, Yahoo, Google Play Store, Apple App Store, etc.

Be specific! Tell everyone what you love about them

6. Word of Mouth

Word of mouth is still the best form of advertising for any small business!
Tell you friends! Tell you Mom! Tell you friend's mom!

7. Use Your Social Media!

Use your own social media to support your favorite businesses. From tagging your favorite food joints in your Instagram food porn to reposting their posts on your stories and tagging them in your #OOTD (out fit of the day). If it's thrifted, you have even more to talk about and hashtag, i.e. why recycling textiles is important to you.
Don't forget to hyper link your favorite thrift/ consignment, too! If you are trying a new recipe? Drop the link to your favorite local place to get produce/ kitchen wear. You get the idea...

8. Sign-up for the Email List

Emails are the easiest way to connect with a business's core and give everyone the most up to date information in one place. Just make sure you check the subject line, because most businesses are great about giving you a clue as to what the email is about.
You will privvy to way more than social media posts. This is going to include: flash sales, new inventory arrivals, snow closures, COVID19 adjustments, etc.

9. Ask for some Business cards that you can sprinkle around town

Going on some errands today? Take a little goody bag of business cards and leave them in places around town while you're just going about your day (make sure these are places that are not just on the ground. littering is bad!). Also, if you have friends with rental properties, suggest adding the business cards for "local favorites"! Renters always appreciate the inside scoop.

10. Last, but certainly not least, if you do decide to go shopping, make sure you hit your local favorites first before just hitting that Prime shipping button
